Song Of The Day: Crystal Castles - Baptism
Crystal Castles (a duo composed of Ethan Kath [producer] and Alice Glass [vocalist]) released their second self-titled album on April 19th. This release had become more and more anticipated, considering that their first album came out way back in March of 2008. Before I listened to it, I couldn’t help but be somewhat pessimistic about any of their future products, aware as I was of the complications that arose when CC performed in the Bard College campus center and Glass’ apparent struggle with alcoholism and self-destruction. But my concerns were happily unwarranted, given that this album exhibits demonstrable growth while not severely distancing the band’s sound from their past work. I was also happy to note that rather than trying to cultivate an electro-pop style that I found to be vaguely prescient within their first album, CC have instead quietly drifted into darker territory, which I find to be more fitting for them, especially after seeing their live performance. Without being too pretentious, as I have no legitimate basis for my opinions, I will say only that I highly recommend this album for anyone who enjoys indie electronica with a dose of corrosion.
